Microflex Advance Ceiling Array Microphones Bring Pristine Speech Intelligibility to Lucas Hall Classrooms for Enhanced Teaching and Learning Capabilities

NILES, ILL., March 6, 2017—Founded in 1851, Santa Clara University (SCU) is a top ranking, private, non-profit Jesuit university located in Santa Clara, California with roughly 5,385 enrolled undergraduates. Lucas Hall, SCU’s School of Business building, was originally built in 2008 and needed a refresh to meet the current demand for remote learning and lecture recording that modern students and professors rely on. As such, the university tasked Avidex, a leading audio visual and technology integration company, to identify a new microphone array that would seamlessly provide flawless recorded lectures, leading them to Shure’s Microflex Advance array solutions.

The Shure Microflex® Advance™ MXA910 Ceiling Array microphones are currently being leveraged in 12 classrooms and one multipurpose room in SCU’s Lucas Hall. The MXA910s are premium networked array microphones that capture best-in-class audio with Shure proprietary Steerable Coverage™ technology, enabling up to eight lobes that are configurable in three dimensions. This technology is especially useful for large classroom and multipurpose environments, as microphones do not need to be constantly moved to pick up the best possible audio and can be easily altered to meet new audio needs in the classroom.

“As a leading institution of higher learning in the heart of Silicon Valley, it was important for us to leverage the most up-to-date recording technology as students increasingly rely on remote learning and recorded lectures to stay ahead in today’s connected learning environments,” said Nancy A. Cutler, Deputy CIO for Academic Technology at Santa Clara University. “After being one of the first customers to install the Shure Microflex Advance ceiling array microphones, we’re convinced these microphones are the absolute best solution for large classroom environments and hope to integrate them into other renovation projects, including our STEM facilities in the near future.”

With Microflex Advance, two ceiling array microphones cover an entire lecture hall or multipurpose room, removing the requirement to equip lecturers and lecture halls with microphones before class or an event. The university also uses the microphone arrays gating to trigger camera presets that direct the camera to the location of the presenter. This solution provides a seamless experience for students and teachers alike. There is nothing lecturers need to know before starting class, as they simply come in and teach, giving them the ability to focus on the lesson plan instead of worrying about setting up the A/V technology.

“While we’ve always trusted Shure for our microphone technologies, we’re particularly impressed with the MXA910s,” said Peter Rafanan, account executive at Avidex. “As an integrator, the Shure Microflex Advance ceiling array microphones really are a paradigm shift for this industry, not just because the technology is so easy to integrate and use, but because it comes with Shure’s superior partnership and support. Prior to installing, we were able to conduct extensive testing alongside Shure personnel, ensuring everything we installed would function at peak performance for years to come.”
